Destiney Webb: Massage Therapist

By Sabrina Hodges, Older House Advisor and Director of Student Services

Destiny Webb enrolled at PS1 Charter School in the Fall of 2006, transferring from Thomas Jefferson High School. Destiny struggled in her early high school career, grappling with personal adversity that affected her education. However, as Destiny came into her own at PS1 she was able to recover credit loss and prepare for her future. Her story is witness that is it never too late for fresh starts and second chances. Destiny’s personal growth during her junior and senior year at PS1 was nothing less than amazing; life didn’t necessarily get easier but she got more resilient. Destiny stepped up as a student leader in the community; her agency and voice are powerful.

A dream undeferred, Destiny completed her senior year in May 2008. Her senior project was a career exploration in Massage Therapy, and as part of the project Destiny interned at the downtown Denver day spa Spa Universaire. This senior project led to Destiny being accepted to the Denver School of Massage Therapy several months before she graduated. She began attending the school in August 2008 and is projected to graduate and begin working the field of massage therapy in August 2009. Destiny states that although message therapy school is sometimes challenging, especially the human anatomy courses, she loves it and is meeting the challenge. She is looking forward to an enjoyable career ahead of her. Destiny left PS1 with essential personal and academic skills necessary to navigate success in the world. She also left with life-long relationships with peers and teachers; below is a poem (written by PS1 teacher Sabrina Hodges) that was recited for Destiny on her graduation day. It truly encapsulates the empowerment and passion of Destiny Webb:

Destiny
The inevitable and irresistible power that determines the future
I’m not talking about IT, I’m, talking about HER.
The power that has the courage to shape tomorrow and
Forgive yesterdays
It’s Destiny
To be determined with force and ferocity
A lioness
Leo
Regal and royal
Like Jada
Vulnerable and Resilient
Like Hallie
Beautiful and Brilliant
Like Beyonce
Beyond what I can say
Inspires in so many ways
Deserving an abundance of praise
Carmel girl wonder sets the stage ablaze
Like marveling melodies belted from the lungs of Donny Hathaway
Singing a Song For You
Deep as the color blue
It gets to you through and through
Like when Maxwell sings “This Woman’s Worth”<
Diligent and wise as Maya Angelou
Writing about being free
She said I’ll never let ya’ll get the best of me,
The roots that nourish its own seed in order to become a tree.
The prisoner that just wants to flee
The spirit that just wants to be
The vessel at sea
The divine finally heard her plea
And not even the sun is brighter than her destiny.
No force can ruin that.
Knowledge of self is stone like that
The intellect is always ready for combat
Because that’s where it’s at<
A queen like Latifah, deserving a crown.
It’s etched in the stars and buried in the ground
The roots are profound and the passion is renowned
That’s why ALL of her dreams are bound
Aspiring to astound
Because she was destined
Destined to be She
They even named her Destiny.
The supreme energy
Queen B
Healing the earth with her sacred honey
Being all that she can be
In her luminescent glory
And iridescent story
That’s meant to be played on the big screen
Like vivid dreams
That you don’t forget in the morning
When the sun rises, the blooms open, and birds sing
That’s your picture perfect Destiny.
